Thursday July 11, 2024 10:55am - 11:40am EDT
In today's digital landscape, districts have implemented a range of protective technologies such as Multi-Factor Authentication, Single Sign-On, and air-gapped backups. While these measures provide a level of security, the question arises: are they truly sufficient for our evolving needs? With an abundance of data assets to safeguard, it becomes imperative to discern which merit the highest levels of protection. Enter Data Classification, a crucial process enabling districts to evaluate the adequacy of their protective technologies in alignment with their specific data demands. By systematically categorizing and prioritizing data, educational institutions can pinpoint vulnerabilities and allocate resources effectively. Join us on an exploration into the intricate galaxy of K-12 data classification, where we delve into the significance of this process in fortifying our data defenses and ensuring the integrity of sensitive information.

Navigating the Federal Data Maze (Double Session)
Thursday July 11, 2024 1:10pm - 1:55pm EDT
The US Census Bureau’s 130 annual surveys document every aspect of the nation's population, schools, governments, economics, and businesses. The resultant 1.5 million tables of raw data are housed in over 50 publicly accessible portals. This hands-on workshop provides a broad overview of the most relevant portals available to professionals in education and the types of data housed within each one. Data portals like the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimate (SAIPE) Program are used to determine school district Title I funding. Data.census.gov provides data relative to disability, languages spoken at home, and caregiver academic achievement, allowing school leaders and boards to strategically budget and plan for early childhood intervention programs. Data on household access to internet and availability of computers in homes is found in the Digital Equity Hub and saved grant writers considerable time when applying for digital equity grants. My Community Explorer maps 12 risk factors associated with community resiliency, all of which align with academic success. We will also locate the data visualization directory. You will leave knowing where to locate a variety of different data portals, what information is housed in each one, and how to save and share results for grants, presentations, and mandated reports. Bring your laptop and take a deeper dive into the tables and maps that can be created in the Census Bureau's signature data portal, data.census.gov.

All Reports ELL: The road to achieveing equity for multi-language learners
Thursday July 11, 2024 3:00pm - 3:45pm EDT
Do you wonder how the English Language Learners (ELLs)/Multi Language Learners (MLLs) in your school district fare academically when compared to other ELLs/MLLs across the state and the county?  What is the percentage of ELLs in each school district across your  county? What are their levels of English language proficiency? Are the majority considered to be newcomers or are they at the entering, transitioning, expanding, or commanding levels of English language acquisition?  What types of educational programs (ENL, bilingual, or dual language) are being offered to ELLs/MLLs? Making these data readily available is an important first step in addressing equity in education when it comes to our growing ELL/MLL population.

Knowledge is power.  Join us to learn about the “one-stop” option and the NYSESLAT/NYSITELL Quick Reference Guides offered through the Nassau BOCES Instructional Data Warehouse (IDW).  These tools serve as an “HOV lane” to give educators easy access to myriad reports that focus on the linguistic and academic performance of ELLs/MLLs.  These will  spark deep conversations about equity and action plans.
